It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Prairie Fire: An American Frontier Rhapsody.
This season celebrates two coinciding milestones: Portland Choir & Orchestra’s 20th anniversary and America’s 250th birthday. The 19th-century American pioneers looked westward with hope and determination, settling new lands, building communities, and shaping a bolder future. As we remember and do our part to perpetuate that spirit of resilience, adventure, and sacrifice, we look with optimism to the expansive possibilities in the future of our community and our nation.
We are especially thrilled to welcome our special guest artist, Carter Brey, Principal Cellist of the New York Philharmonic. For me (Ken Hollenzer) this evening carries an extra layer of joy: Carter and I ran track, sang together in choir, and performed in our high school orchestra in South Salem, New York many years ago. It is a genuine delight to share the stage with him again after all this time.
We invite you to join us on this musical journey across our vast and varied frontier history. It is our hope that faith, community, and the pioneering spirit come alive through sweeping orchestral landscapes and stirring choral harmonies.
On behalf of the entire Portland Choir & Orchestra, thank you for being part of our 20th Anniversary season. May this music fill you with a renewed sense of the bright future available to us, as we choose to pursue it.

Ken Hollenzer, Executive Director

Carter Brey, Principal Cellist, NY Philharmonic
Carter Brey was born in Montclair, New Jersey and grew up in Westchester County, New York. He began playing the violin at age 9 and the cello at age 12 in school, although he did not seriously consider becoming a professional musician until he was 16. He studied under Laurence Lesser and Stephen Kates at Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Institute and later with Aldo Parisot at Yale University, where he was a Wardell Fellow and a Houpt Scholar. He taught at the University of South Florida in between his time at Peabody and Yale. In 1979 he joined the Cleveland Orchestra where he played for two seasons.
Brey came to international attention in 1981 when he won the 3rd Prize of the Rostropovich International Cello Competition, which led to his playing the Robert Schumann Cello concerto under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich with the National Symphony Orchestra in 1983. In 1982 he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which led to his New York City recital debut at the 92nd Street Y. These competition wins kick-started his career as a cello soloist and he has since performed with almost every major symphony orchestra in the United States under such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Semyon Bychkov, Sergiu Comissiona, and Christoph von Dohnanyi.
As a chamber musician, Brey has performed with the Tokyo String Quartet, the Emerson String Quartet, New York Youth Symphony, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He has performed at the Spoleto festivals in the United States and Italy, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the La Jolla Chamber Music Festival and elsewhere.
Brey lives in New York City. He joined the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music in 2008.

In addition to his new role as Orchestra Director of Portland Choir & Orchestra, Ken Selden is Director of Orchestral Studies at Portland State University, a position he has held since 2006. They perform annual ballet and opera productions, and the orchestra has hosted guest artists Manuel Barrueco, China Forbes, Matt Haimovitz, Anna Polonsky, Awadagin Pratt, and Orli Shaham.
Since arriving in Portland, Mr. Selden has appeared as guest conductor of the Oregon, Vancouver, Newport, and Eugene Symphonies, as well as the Salem Chamber Orchestra, Third Angle, Fear No Music, and Portland Youth Philharmonic.
Mr. Selden made his professional debut with the National Arts Center Orchestra of Canada at the invitation of Pinchas Zuckerman, and subsequently appeared with orchestras of Denver, Baltimore and Minnesota. He has also conducted the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and orchestras in Finland, Italy, and Belgium.
He is a graduate of New England Conservatory, Indiana University and Peabody Conservatory, and attended the National Conducting Institute at the Kennedy Center, where he studied with Leonard Slatkin and conducted the National Symphony.
Mr. Selden has worked with composers Pierre Boulez, John Cage, and Tan Dun, and has conducted world premieres of music by Peter Lieberson, Michael Nyman, and Stephen Paulus.

David M. Thomas enjoys a strong reputation throughout the Pacific Northwest as a conductor who fuses technique and artistry to provide a compelling and transformative musical experience.
Dr. Thomas excels as a choral musician through his unwavering commitment to healthy vocal production in the choir. He attributes much of his success as a conductor and pedagogue to the early influence of his mother, Beverly (soprano and conductor), and his years of study and performance with Dr. Ronald Staheli. Dr. Thomas (baritone) soloed in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s well-known weekly television broadcast, on the Mariinsky Theatre stage, and has prepared choirs or collaborated as a guest conductor with many prestigious ensembles including the Oregon Repertory Singers and the Newport Symphony Orchestra.
After earning additional degrees in Russian language (BA) and choral conducting (MM) at Brigham Young University, Dr.Thomas received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire in St. Petersburg Russia. He has continually integrated Russian music in his performance and research, providing performance coaching for ensembles and soloists, and presenting scholarly work at national and regional level professional conferences. Dr. Thomas is highly sought after as a clinician and adjudicator. Artistic Director of Portland Choir & Orchestra since 2007, Dr. Thomas also finds great joy teaching and performing with his wife, Emily (Soprano), and together, raising their five children.

Jennie Peterson received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with a secondary education choral emphasis from Brigham Young University in 2007. She has a passion for choral music that started from a very young age and has enjoyed participating in and directing various choirs throughout her life at church and in her community. She is a proud mother of five children.
